Samsung Galaxy A7 Review

Design and Body

Want proof that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a phone that feels premium? That’s the effect of the design of the Galaxy A7. It features glass on the back and front as well as aluminium on the sides which has a plastic-like finish even though it’s not. It’s also easy to notice the bezels which a deviation from the trendy edge-to-edge displays and highest screen-to-body ratio. At 7.5mm thin, the smartphone is slender enough to feel good in the hands without feeling too weighty.

Just like most mid-range phones, there’s no physical home button and it’s pretty the same with the other two buttons on its either side which are also onscreen. The volume rockers and the power button are positioned on the right side of the smartphone while the SIM tray which supports two SIM cards and a microSD card are on the right side. Unusually, the fingerprint scanner is side-mounted, just near the power and volume controls, a design decision borrowed from Sony phones of old.

The fingerprint scanner is responsive and so is the Face Unlock feature which can equally help you get into your phone fast. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top and an old-school micro-USB port for charging and transfer. Flip the phone and there’s not much to see other than its triple camera setup and logo. Sadly, there’s no IP-certified water resistance of any sort.

Colours

The Samsung Galaxy A7 smartphone is available in four colour variants namely: black, blue, gold and pink.

Display

Samsung is usually known for its great displays and it’s no different this time as the Galaxy A7 has one of the most advanced screens available at the price. The device comes with a seriously good AMOLED screen which packs a FULL HD+ resolution, a feat only possible because the panels are produced by the brand. Getting down to digits, it’s a 1080 x 2220 pixels screen and a density of 411 per inch.

Understandably, the screen doesn’t offer the same colour accuracy and output like its flagship counterpart but it does exceedingly better than most devices with IPS screens. Whether it’s for movies, photos or general UI swiping through, the Samsung Galaxy A7 nails with it a superb colour accuracy, contrast and sharpness. Thankfully, there’s a Corning Gorilla Glass to keep the front and back protected against drops and scrapes.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A7 comes with a 3,300 battery cell which is fractionally larger than its close rivals like the Moto G6 Plus. On moderate use, the device can last for a full day and even more if you don’t bump the screen brightness to the max. Unlike other smartphones, Samsung’s OLED screens are usually power efficient and likewise the chipsets, so the battery juice won’t drain too fast so it can last longer while you watching movies or surf the net.

And to add, don’t expect fast charging on this device as its uses a micro USB port instead of the modern USB-C, neither is there wireless charging. It might take a little more than two hours to top up battery juice from 0-100%.

Camera

The triple camera setup is one of the strong marketing points of the Galaxy A7 as it’s a first from Samsung. The main camera unit has a 24MP sensor with an f/1.7 lens, an 8MP sensor with an f/2.4 lens and a 5MP depth sensor with an f/2.2 lens. The rear camera setup allows for extra-wide shots, DSLR-style shallow depth of field images, and digital zoom. The shooters capture great images in daylight which are warm, colour rich and detailed. The night photos are quite satisfactory too. Meanwhile, the selfie camera sports a 24MP shooter which also gives detailed images so you don’t have to edit again before you post them on the social media.

Processor

Powering the Samsung Galaxy A7 is the manufacturer’s self-made Exynos 7885 octa-core chipset which clocks at a frequency of 2.2GHz. It’s not a great score but it has enough power to give a smooth Android experience, but heavy gamers might want to look elsewhere as the performance fall short of what a modern phone should deliver. The device lost some frames when we played graphically intense games like Asphalt 9 and Fortnite. The processor is supported by 3GB, 4GB, and 6GB of RAM, depending on the variant you purchase.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A7 is one of the few great mid-range phones you can find with punchy features that deliver a solid user experience. It has great battery stamina, sleek design, and large storage, and will make for a great smartphone for phone enthusiast on a budget.
